The Power of “Thank You” - StarterStudio

The Power of “Thank You”

Shan Shanbhag, Ph.D.

The simple “Thank You” is one of the most powerful ways to engage people. The most effective leaders work diligently to thank their people. The validation can come from the end-of-the day departures and acknowledging extra effort on the fly, or even just thanking them for doing their routine work, giving input, or being positive throughout the day. These leaders know the value of their people, and by saying “Thank You,” they help feed the hunger that all of us have for belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualization.

During a visit to the NASA space center in 1962, President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor carrying a broom. He interrupted his tour, walked over to the man, and said, “Hi, I am Jack Kennedy. What are you doing?” “Well Mr. President,” the janitor responded, “I’m helping put a man on the moon.” To most people, this janitor was just cleaning the building. But in the more mythic, larger story unfolding around him, he was helping to make history. Here is the point: No matter how large or small your role, you are contributing to the larger story unfolding within your life, your business, and your organization. And when your entire team embraces that type of attitude and belief system, incredible things happen.

Take every opportunity to find a reason to say “Thank You” as often as you can. Thanking your people for their joint efforts is a straightforward and easy way to make powerful, lasting impression in your organization. You will see how powerful it is at engaging people. Let us decide to explore why are we here, discovering what we love to do, how our unique gifts and talents can impact this planet and leave a legacy that goes beyond stock options and yachts.

Hello politicians, the whole world is watching you. You should not be ashamed to be nice to your colleagues on the other side of the aisle. We have no business preaching to the rest of the world unless we start following our own advice. Let us strive to make Thanksgiving a global celebration.
